In 2017 the top of a box of Allen & Ginter cards would contain a “box loader” card, which in itself was a take on 1880’s “Cabinet Cards”. These were typically oversized, 5×7 cards that were essentially photographs with a small plaque from the photography studio at the bottom. Topps’s recreation featured a purple paper border and sepia colored photographs of players Photoshopped into scenes from the 1800’s. I wanted to bring in some color and try a version that was more “painterly” than photograph.
